COMMISSIONS

I’m a big believer in the power of art to make you feel good. And a commissioned piece of art that has a part of you in it can be even more meaningful.

What I offer is the opportunity to collaborate and create a one of a kind piece (or pieces) to make you (or someone else) feel good. It can be whimsical, or very structured, or just colourful - or any combination thereof.

My 25+ years as an advertising writer and creative director has armed me with an ability to generate loads of ideas as well as a very important crap filter to cull those ideas down to a precious few worthy ones.

Get a piece of art for yourself or as a gift for someone else. Heck, maybe you want to make 17 prints for the regional management team for hitting their Q3 sales projections or 100 prints for a wedding or family reunion. Let’s DO IT.

Here are some of the technique/idea neighbourhoods I like working in these days:

I love the idea of using bold, striking colours and type to tell a story, express a thought, make a statement, or project a belief.  Here’s where I like to lean into whimsical, but a more earnest and honest take on this style can be really powerful and emotional too. Here are a few pieces that show you how it can work.

Maybe you have a favourite animal or kitchen appliance. Maybe it’s time to artistically act on your obsession with pelicans. Maybe you want to say something heartfelt/snarky/playful about a special place or person. Anything goes.

SAY SOMETHING

I’ve recently fallen in love with exploring how hatch lines can create a striking visual effect with layers of playful colour. And introducing an element of type can deliver a story, idea, or sentiment within these crisscrossing lines.

Maybe you want your favourite colours to criss cross to build a landscape. Maybe you want a hatch mark halo around a picture of your dog. Maybe you just like stars. It all works for me.

HATCH LINES

I’m a big fan of assembling bits and pieces of the world into semi-orderly order. I also love how objects decay in their own ways and speeds, and how striking it can be to arrange them in an interesting way.

Maybe you have 62 of your grandmother’s salt and pepper shakers you’d like to create something with. Or you have a thing for manhole covers or wasp nests or vending machines. Pick a launchpad and I can launch from it.

OBJECTS AND MORE OBJECTS

Screen printed interventions of carefully selected and positioned shapes, objects, or type onto an interesting photograph can make it into something surprising and new. You can project a memory, or editorialize it. Or earnestly celebrate it. This is a great way to go beyond a “here’s a big photo of the (insert place/people/things) we love”. Here are a few examples I just made up to show how extra elements can play in a photo.

PROCESS, PRICE, AND TIMING

At the starting line you think about what you want, specifically or generally. Then we have to meet for a gingerale and talk about it. Then I have to go away and come back with a pile of ideas and options and pricing. Then you have to pick something (Ideas 2 or 5 are usually really good ones). Then we have a discussion about layers, colours, paper, and size. Then I have to create a mock up to get your sign off. Then you say GO MAKE IT. Then I make it. It could take 2 weeks. Or 3. Or 6. Who knows! That seems roughly about the right process.

I love art and I love ideas. And I love smashing them together to create something new even more.
